Life Is A Game

Monday, May 09, 2011

From the brilliant mind of Werner Erhard, the creator of EST comes a mind-boggling quote. To be perfectly honest, at first reading it seems like a lot of nonsense and word-play, but if you read it carefully and just let it come to you, I think you'll find it to be pretty amazing. t took me a few readings to wrap my head around it, but then when I got it, I loved it, and I think you will too. After that, click on the video and just sit back and prepare to be amazed ; )

One creates from nothing.

If you try to create from something you're just changing something.

So in order to create something you first have to be able to create nothing.

To make sure a person doesn't find out who he is, convince him that he can't really make anything disappear.

All that's left then is to resist, solve, fix, help or change things.

That's trying to make something out of something.

Life is a game.

In order to have a game something has to be more important than something else.

If what already is, is more important than what isn't, the game is over.

So life is a game in which what isn't

Let the good times roll.

Let It Be Something Good

Friday, July 29, 2011

Here's a great quote to help kick off your weekend:

"This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever; in its place is something that you have left behind...let it be something good."

What's Your Carrot?

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

In CrossFit we always say that we specialize in not specializing...that we don't train to be great at any one thing, but to be good at many things. It's about becoming a more complete and well rounded athlete, to be able to work hard and play hard, or, as we like to say...to not suck at life.

With that being said, there is much work to be done, skills to learn; double unders, overhead squats, kipping pullups, power cleans, snatches, plyometrics, etc, and to get good at these things we need to practice...to come early and stay late. If you find yourself in that category, but seem to be lacking the motivation to do the extra work to get good, perhaps you should consider using a reward system.

In other words, pick a movement that up till now has been the bane of your existence...say double unders, and set a goal of being able to do 50 straight. If you really want to increase your chances of hitting the goal, then set a deadline for accomplishing that...say 3 weeks...then get to work, practicing 10 minutes every day.

Finally, dangle the carrot...the prize, if you will, that you will reward yourself with for reaching the goal. How big should the prize be? I don't know...maybe it all depends on the suck factor of what you're trying to master. If it's something that you know you'll probably be able to pull off in a reasonably short period of time, them maybe make the reward a new pair of Vibrims.  However if it's something really big that's been eluding you for months, like your first muscle-up, then maybe a new Vizio 55 Inch HD LED with 3-D will do the trick!

For many, just the satisfaction of attaining the goal itself is enough of a reward, but for the rest of you, I'm thinking...dangle a big-ass carrot, baby!

Wait For It...

Friday, August 26, 2011

The unknown and the unknowable. Yup, according to the gospel of CrossFit, this is what we train for on a daily basis; to prepare our bodies to be able to deal with any obstacle that has the audacity to place itself in our path. Move thousands of pounds of weight in just 20 short minutes...HA!...a walk in the park! Run a 5K with a keg on our shoulders...yawn...sounds like a warmup to me!

But today we changed all that: We knew that we needed to think outside the box, hell...we needed to get rid of the box and just stop thinking altogether!...and so that is how we came up with the perfect challenge...wait for it...wait for it...

To do a workout while we're drunk! Here's how it all went down:

Everybody did a shot and then began the workout, which in this case was the legendary deck of cards workout. I don't want to give away any trade secrets about how this workout is performed, but it is fast and furious and centers around all bodyweight movements.

Burpees come up in this workout at four different times, and each time they did, everybody would stop and do another shot, then quickly resume the workout. It's brilliant...I know, I know!

Now I'm sure that some of you reading this may not approve of our innovative behavior, (you probably hate the 3 stooges too...you rat-bastards) but before you start judging, just hear me out: where is it written that all of the hardest things that may ever happen to you in life are always going to happen when you're wide awake, sober, in a good mood, in air conditioning, or even while you're nourished and hydrated? Navy Seals go through "hell week" to prepare for worst-case scenarios that could occur while at war and though we're just civilians, we need to be prepared too, dammit!

Burpees, tire flips, power cleans, kettlebell swings...it's all become too predictable. We need to blaze new trails and stop trailing the blazers! I want all of you to start contributing new and fresh ideas for challenging workouts just like the one we had here today.

I'll get you started ; )

Tonight when you're at happy hour with you compadres, here's your 1st new CrossFit Body Construction challenge: Get everybody in your group (hell...in the whole bar for that matter) to down one beer, stuff their mouth with as many chicken wings as possible and then, while holding the wings in their mouth and not swallowing, do 100 pushups for time. This workout definitely has real life applications, I'm sure, though I can't think of a single one right now.

Okay, my work here is done. The weekend is upon us and I'm officially on vacation as of right now. I'll be back with a new blog on Tueseday Sept 7th. I may post something here and there in the meantime, but it's highly doubtful, as I'm sure that I'll be busy speading the gospel of the drunken workout during my travels across the Midwest ; )

You snooze - you lose. We're kicking ass and taking names by 6am!

Creation - A Sioux Indian Story

Friday, September 16, 2011

The Creator gathered all of Creation and said, "I want to hide something from the humans until they are ready for it. It is the realization that they create their own reality." The eagle said, "Give it to me, I will take it to the moon." The Creator said, "No. One day they will go there and find it." The salmon said, "I will bury it on the bottom of the ocean." "No. They will go there too." The buffalo said, "I will bury it on the Great Plains." The Creator said, "They will cut into the skin of the Earth and find it even there." Grandmother Mole, who lives in the breast of Mother Earth, and who has no physical eyes but sees with spiritual eyes, said, "Put it inside of them." And the Creator said, "It is done."

Yeah, their view is kind of cool, but we've got a McDonalds across the street!
