The DAD Life

Friday, June 24, 2011

God, I love being a Dad.  Being a single man has many rewards of it's own too, and I admit that I loved every second of it when I was living it, but being a Dad is its own kind of cool that's unlike anything else you'll ever do. Plus, it requires you to add a lot more tools to your tool box, like empathy, understanding, patience and the ability to put together toys that have over 500 moving parts with instructions that were written in Vietnamese.

For me, I knew I was truly immersed in Daddyland when I found myself at a Babies R' Us at 9pm on a Friday night many years ago. My daughter was about 2 years old at the time and was walking down each aisle pulling every toy off the shelf, playing with it for approximately 34 seconds before tiring of it and then throwing it 20 feet away from where it belonged.

I looked at my beautiful wife who was the co-creator of this crazy little person that had stolen my heart and realized that there was no where else I'd rather be at that moment...I was content. Now I've added two more chitlins' to the mix and each day of my life resembles a Gary Busey reality show, as craziness and reckless abandon are the norm...and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world ; )

So give your Dad a hug, tell him you love him and then show him just how much by giving him 20 minutes of uninterrupted time in the bathroom, that'll make his day. (when you have kids, going to the bathroom becomes your one legitamite excuse for getting away from them...it becomes to you what the fortress of solitude is to Superman...trust me on this) Oh, and cut us some slack about our bad haircut, dated wardrobe and our fondness for music that doesn't contain swear words. Believe it or not, before we met your Mom we were all super cool...at least in our minds : 0

If you had to pick just one...

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

Back in the day this picture of actress Betty Grable was hands down the sexiest thing that anyone had ever seen, end of conversation. Flash forward 50 years and things have changed a bit. Exercise, specifically weight training, used to be a world that men dominated, but the ladies are catching on fast and starting to realize that muscle can be sexy.

The key, I'm sure most of you will agree, is finding that right balance of muscle and still having enough curves to look like a woman. Most guys are in agreement that we would prefer it if our wives and girlfriends don't look like they can bench more then we can. That's the landscape for now, but who knows; maybe 50 years from now the new sexy for women will be a shaved head, 16 inch pythons (arms) and a 400lb deadlift?!

Ladies Quote of the day: Strong Is The New Skinny

And just out of curiosity...

Ladies - Which body would you rather have?

Guys - Which body do you find more attractive?

Are You Prepared?

Monday, August 22, 2011

One of the things that we joke about pertaining to our CrossFit training is that if the world goes to hell-in-a-handbag (total financial collapse, giant meteor striking the earth, nuclear war, alien invasion, etc), we're going to stand a pretty good chance of surviving because of the strength, speed and all around athletic conditioning that we're developing.

Then the other day I come across this blog (below) written by a 3 time war vetran that talks about the exact tools that we would need to survive in a worst-case scenerio, and it got me to thinking that the extreme fitness skills that we're developing will still need to be supported by the proper gear.

It's a very sobering thought, but given the current state of our world, it only makes sense to be prepared. After all, our great grandfathers built bomb shelters in their backyards becuse of what was happening back in the day, so maybe we should we should set aside a little coin for a few items that could possibly save our lives down the road...?

"It's funny and sometimes quasi-useful to read about zombie survival and all that, but in my humble opinion, zombies are not a viable focal point due to lack of reality. I think we would be better served to prepare for a complete collapse of civilization, where your greatest threats are surviving nature off the grid, and surviving other survivors.

We humans have a very long history of doing horrendous things to each other, be wary. Think about how psychotic people can be driving, and that's in the face of law and consequences; absent law and order, you need to be very alert about people's intentions. These are things that may be good to accumulate over a few years time.

This will serve as a sense of security for you and people you care about if law and order exit stage left. There are things you will need that money cannot buy: stay in decent shape, learn survival skills, learn to think critically and tactically. Go camping or hiking from time to time, just to see how you would fare in the wilderness if you had to."
