Why You Train

Monday, August 03, 2009

Do you ever think about why you train and what you're really trying to accomplish? I can't say for sure that this has a right or wrong answer to it, as different people have different motivations for why they train.

Most people train to acquire a certain "look", as evidenced by the words they use to describe what they're going for; "cut", "buff", "ripped", "tone", etc. And while we all want to look good naked, I think we need to add the phrase "quality of life" to that list of why we train.

I believe that to truly get the most out of life, you need to be able to fully participate in whatever life throws at you. That means being healthy and having a body that is fit enough to do what you want, when you want.

That's why our training philosophy is to exercise in such a way as; "To be able to do anything, anytime, anywhere, under any conditions." That's a tall order, but so is life.

There are many beautiful places to go and amazing things to experience in this lifetime, and while it's true you can go the pampered route, the really amazing stuff is only going to happen when you're ready and able to get off the beaten track and immerse yourself in an adventure.

What am I talking about? How about Bungee Jumping, hiking the Grand Canyon, Sky Diving, White Water Rafting, Running a Marathon, Doing a Triathlon, Climbing Mt. Whitney, Scuba Diving, and the list goes on forever.

While some of those only require you to show up and strap in, they still  require a strong, healthy body to even participate, and whether you want to do some of those or not isn't the point...it's having the capability to do them if you wanted to, that's what's important. So don't just train to look good, train to participate as well.

"Its a good day when your fat jeans could now fit two of you, your regular jeans have now became your fat jeans, and your daughters jeans now look better on you than her!"
